In July 2021, Assembly Bill (AB) 130 was signed into law, making California the first state in the nation to implement a Universal Meals Program for all K–12 public school students. Under AB 130, every student is eligible to receive two free meals each school day—one breakfast and one lunch—at no cost to families, regardless of income.
The program builds on the federal National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP), with additional state funding to ensure no child goes hungry during the school day.
