    Principal's Message

    Summer 2017

    August 2017

    Dear Muscatel Families and Community:

On behalf of the Muscatel Middle School staff, I am excited to welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year! We are looking forward to a productive partnership with our Muscatel families to ensure our students can achieve their highest potential. We recognize that in order to be successful in school, our students need support from both the home and school. We know a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for our students' successes and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities. We ask that you guide and support your child’s learning by ensuring that he/she:

    1) Attends school daily and arrives on time, ready for the day’s learning experience

    2) Completes all homework assignments given by teachers

    3) Reads daily to develop a love for reading and to improve literacy skills

    4) Shares school experiences with you so that you are aware of his/her school life

    5) Informs you if he/she needs additional support in any area or subject

    6) Knows that you expect him/her to succeed in school and go on to college

Muscatel’s motto is “Setting the Standard for Excellence,” and our staff believes that by having high standards for both students and staff, all students can be successful and have an enriching experience while at Muscatel Middle School. This year promises to be great as we set high expectations for learning. Most importantly, administrators, teachers and staff are ready to motivate and engage our students in learning. Teachers have been busy planning and preparing their classrooms for the new year. We have been revising our curriculum and aligning it to the Common Core State Standards.

Each child brings to school a unique set of gifts to share. We treasure each child and will work hard to ensure that your child learns, grows and develops into an independent learner and leader who will become college and career ready upon graduation from high school. We are excited to continue implementing the Leader In Me Program at Muscatel this year as well as continuing to expand our PBIS program. Last year we held our Inaugural Leadership Day and it was an exciting and rewarding experience to showcase the rigorous curriculum, clubs, activities, and student leaders here at Muscatel.

Please consider joining our parent committees as our students can greatly benefit from your involvement and contributions to the school’s program and its operations. One way to become involved is by joining the Muscatel PTSA. Membership is a reasonable $10.00 and goes towards supporting student activities and programs on campus. We also encourage parents to help by chaperoning dances, or just supporting PTSA by purchasing membership or attending our monthly meetings. Either way, you are demonstrating to your child that you are committed to him/her having a successful two years at Muscatel.

We are also looking for parents to become involved in the decision making process here at Muscatel by being a member of the School Site Council Committee (S.S.C.). Members may serve up to two (2) consecutive terms, and are elected by a ballot vote by their peers. This year’s election will be held on Back To School Night, Wednesday, September 20, 2017 between 5:00 – 7:00 pm. The School Site Council Committee consists of school staff members, parents and students. We meet on a monthly basis (designated Wednesday’s of each month at 2:45 p.m.) If you would like the opportunity to have a voice in how school improvement monies are spent, please stop by the front office and pick up a form and return to Ms. Price, School Office Manager, no later than Wednesday, September 13th 2017.

School starts on Wednesday August 23, 2017. The first day of school is a minimum days. The minimum day school hours are 7:57 a.m. to 12 p.m. Regular school hours are from 7:57 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. for seventh and eighth grade students. Parents, due to safety concerns and because adult supervision is not provided until 7:35 a.m., students must not arrive at school before 7:35 a.m.

Students must wear their school uniform every day. During the first week of school, the 1st period teacher will talk to students about Muscatel’s citizenship plan, extra-curricular activities, and answer any questions students may have about Muscatel. On Monday, August 28th, there will be a school-wide student assembly to discuss and review school rules, regulations and extra-curricular activities.

SAFETY CONCERNS. Parents please do not use the front parking lot as a “drop off” or “pick up” location for your children. Students must be dropped off/picked up in front of the school on Ivar Avenue. As alternatives to Ivar, you may use Lawrence Street, to the north of the campus, or any of the other side streets. The parking lot is reserved for visitors to the campus or those who have school business inside the office. Thank you for your cooperation.

We look forward to the new school year, and working together collaboratively as we “raise the bar” for excellence at Muscatel.

    Ms. Jessica Ancona
